Important Aspects of Laying for Wooden Floors

Laying the floor for the building is easy when you know how. If one takes care of the small things, the entire process becomes simple and functional. You have many choices when it comes to the method of laying the floor planks.

Allow for expansion

To ensure the best wood floor installation you must watch out for one or two important points. The first and most important thing about laying the wooden floor is to allow the planks the needed gap for expansion. If you do not do so, you will have a warped floor when summer comes along.

You can check this is right by using simple guidelines. Mark the centre of the four walls and use a chalk line to snap the centre. Measure the distance to the wall from the centre and deduct the expansion gap specification given by the manufacturer. Mark this distance all around. Lay the planks inside the gap in a proper way to keep the space covered.

Check the quality of the subfloor

Another important thing you must consider for the best wood floor installation is whether the subfloor has the needed quality. To ensure that it has, make sure it is dry, clean, level, and has enough strength. Clean the subfloor, remove the debris and vacuum the dust off the surface. Check the level using a spirit level and check for squeaking boards. Screw these down with a couple of nails. Then, see that they are dry. Use of standard material for the subfloor ensures enough strength.

You can use any of the methods for laying the wooden planks. One of the popular methods is the Click method. In this method, the adjacent planks remain locked in place through a recessed structure present in all the planks. These help secure the floor plank in place and add to the strength of the structure.

Installing the Hardwood Subfloor for Your House or Office

A structure is robust because it has a strong base on which you build the walls and everything else. This is the sub-floor, a part of the house or office structure you do not see. You see it when you lay the floor and must prepare the sub-floor first.

Find out how much material you need

When we begin to fix wood flooring we get an estimate of the material we need by taking the floor area. For rectangular sections, this is the product of the length and breadth. For instance, if the length is 12.4 feet and the breath is 17.9 feet, then the floor area is 12.5 x 17.9 = 222 square feet. Add 10% of the area to account for wastage and you have the amount of material you need as 244 square feet.

Once you have the material, you ensure the sub-floor is clean, level, dry, and strong. Remove any dust and debris and lay the damp proofing membrane. You must do the door trimming because the height of the room in now changed. Cut the door frames as needed so the boards can fit below.

Different methods for fixing the floor

We have many methods of fixing the flooring. The first is the floating method and it is so called because we do not use any glue. The boards stay in place due to locks in the wooden planks or using tongue and groove. The first method is the click method where each plank has a locking mechanism that secures the neighboring plank. This way, we fix the flooring planks without nails or glue.

The second method without adhesives is the tongue and groove technique. In this, the planks have grooves on one of the thin sides and have grooves on the other side. So, they fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. This is the other way you can fix wood flooring over the sub-floor

We have the glue-down and the nail-down methods too. We need such instances for cases like parquet block fitting and hardwood floors where the thickness of the plank is 18mm or more.

Floor Laying with Solid Wood and Laminated Wood for Modern Houses

A house is only as great as its various parts are. And, one of the most important parts is the floor. Often, the floor falls into a state of disrepair and you find you should redo it.

Use the professionals

If you plan to redo your flooring, you have the option of using the professional Wood floor installer. They lay the floor in double quick time and you can sit back and enjoy the new floor. But then, there are those that like to do the flooring by themselves. It is an adventure but most of them do it to save the money. And, this amounts to quite a bit.

You can choose the hardwood floor or the laminated board flooring. Both are equally pleasing but many house owners prefer the laminated board flooring. Why is this? In the olden days, the first choice was for the solid wood floors because they were stable and lasted for a lifetime. But, there is one problem. They are subject to warping. So, after a few months or possibly years, you will find the boards bent and sticking out strangely in various parts of the room.

Use of modern ply board

The laminated ply board is not like that at all. It is made of modern plywood pieces sandwiched together in a manner that they have uniform thickness throughout the sheet. The sheets are cut into even layers of the required thickness and put on the floor.

Because of their inherent nature, the laminated board withstand warping well. They come in a variety of colours and shades and you can even have specific designs according to the interior décor of the room. This makes it a favourite with all the modern people who like to keep their décor vibrant and their floors contemporary.

The comprehensive design service of the professional floor layers along with the extensive designs and colors on offer makes it a better choice. But, for those who wish to save some money, laying their own floor may seem the best thing to do.
